 NOWNESS Shorts: Better

Positioned as a coming out film for disability, narrative short Better explores sibling relationships and ableism within the context of disabled identity, developed by British writer/director Zoe Hunter Gordon with disabled producer/associate writer Celestine Fraser.

As a young chronically ill person, living on her own terms by the seaside, Kitty has reconciled her identity with her illness – undergoing a huge shift her family finds harder to process. While she has grown to accept her own chronic illness, her sister Ruth visits her in a new town by the sea and struggles to let go of the idea that she may one day “get well” and live a non-disabled life.

Seeking an actor who also lives with a chronic illness for the role of Kitty, Milly Zero was cast alongside Ellie James, transferring her own experience to the character and the sentiment at the film’s core. Shot in Essex and framed from Ruth’s point of view, the film opens up conversation about how non-disabled people can support people with disabilities on their own terms, needing to undergo their own process of growth to reach a point of understanding.
