Connecting with near-invisible creatures to deepen his understanding of his place in the universe, professional microscopist James Weiss has collected a vast digital following through his close observations of microscopic organisms. Entering the surreal realm of rotifers, water bears, paramecia, ciliates, Weiss narrates the lives of these alien-like beings, hidden in plain sight, expanding perspectives on the natural world through the microscopic images that occupy his social media account, Jam’s Germs.

Collaborating with director Spencer MacDonald, Weiss stars in short film A Body Called Life, telling a story scripted through his own experience, and desire to reconnect. Bringing together documentary and fiction, MacDonald worked with Weiss to translate his Instagram posts and stories to the film’s script – allowing his words to voice a direct reflection of his life. Finding a source of solace from the isolation of complex PTSD, A Body Called Life follows James as he works to accept the scars of his past, embracing the magic of life through the tender lens he casts on the microscopic world.
