Just Dance: What We Were
Considering the conditions for serendipity presented by life in New York City, and the Korean concept of inyeon – or fate – director Kate Collins and choreographer Evan Sagadencky explore the possibilities of fleeting connections in short film What We Were. Growing from reflections on Celine Song’s Past Lives, and deeper exploration of inyeon as its underpinning philosophy, the short dance film follows a train journey through Brooklyn, where two strangers meet and find themselves inexplicably drawn to one another.
As the skyline falls away behind them, they enter a series of emotive exchanges through dance, capturing the immediate sense of connection that can be felt without warning. Shot against the Hudson in Dumbo, Sagadencky performs alongside dancer Dan Santiago, using movement to translate the strength of feeling that carries wordless fantasies constructed between strangers – and the collected stories developed through eye contact and chance encounters.
