 ​Just Dance: New Year’s Prayer

Reinterpreting the music of Jeff Buckley for a new production, Grace – opening in Paris in November 2024 – French choreographer Benjamin Millepied offers an exclusive preview of original choreography developed for the piece with short film New Year’s Prayer.

Set against Buckley’s track of the same name, New Year’s Prayer plays with pace to create a disruptive sense of movement, oscillating between dynamic sequences and hypnotic moments that unfold in slow motion. Approaching the artistry and emotion of the late artist as a means of expression, the music serves as a starting point for a series of tableaux that tell the story of Buckley’s life through passion, pain, love, success, and tragedy.

Voyaging deep into Buckley’s work, and his unique ability to embody different styles, Millepied recognized the interconnectedness of his craft, and the dance that entered his mind upon listening to his music. Turning this imagined state of movement into choreography, New Year’s Prayer stands as the opening chapter in a celebration of a legacy, expanding on Buckley’s infinite power as a contemporary influence.
