Just Dance: Love Letter (on shuffle)
A melancholic love story, told through contemporary ballet, American choreographer Kyle Abraham’s Love Letter (on shuffle) returns to the David H. Koch Theater on 15 May as part of the New York City Ballet’s 75th anniversary season.
Translating the production’s central solo for a new dance short of the same name, directed by Saela Davis & Anna Rose Holmer, New York City Ballet Principal Dancer Taylor Stanley takes center stage, performing against the neoclassical grandeur of the Weylin in Williamsburg. Uniting Abraham’s kinetic choreography with music by London-born producer James Blake and Andre 3000, and eccentric costuming by British designer Giles Deacon, the piece illuminates a poignant collision of classical and contemporary influences, incorporating movement drawn from club culture and the African American vernacular.
Captured by cinematographer Christine Ng to reflect the luminosity of late ‘70s aesthetics, Stanley’s electric performance traces their character’s search for love, and the emotions that rise when this search is fulfilled – through the doubts and uncertainties of a blossoming relationship in its early stages. Taking the New York City Ballet to new physical and emotional heights, its self-described “mixtape of life” shifts the Company’s storytelling into a new space, with Abraham’s genre-bending vision front and center.
